Food Safety & Standards
Ensuring the safety, hygiene, and quality of food in Gibraltar is a core responsibility of the Environmental Agency. We work to enforce food legislation, carry out inspections, and promote best practices to protect public health.
Food Imports
Ensuring the safety and compliance of imported food is a vital responsibility of the Environmental Agency. All food products brought into Gibraltar are subject to inspection and must meet established health and hygiene standards. Our goal is to safeguard public health by preventing the entry of unsafe or non-compliant food items.
Notifiable Diseases
There are a number of diseases, which must be notified to the Environmental Agency when diagnosed by a doctor. Some of these diseases, for example food poisonings, may require investigation by the Environmental Health Officer.
Making a food safety complaint
Report a food safety issue with businesses including restaurants, cafes, takeaways and shops.
What you can report to us
• Dirty or poor condition of premises;
• Poor food handling;
• Poor staff hygiene;
• Pests inside the food business (cockroaches, rats, mice or flies);
• Suspected food poisoning;
• Foreign bodies in your food such as plastic and glass;
• Food sold past sell by date;
• Mouldy food;
• Unusual tasting or smelling food;
• Raw or undercooked food.
What happens to your complaint
If we can investigate your complaint an Environmental Health Officer will contact you usually within 48 hours to acknowledge your complaint and to gather further information about your complaint if necessary.
We carefully evaluate the level of risk and decide whether a visit to the food business is necessary. All businesses that are reported are informed of the complaint, but we will never disclose your personal details to them. In certain cases, we may need to share your information with other organisations if this is required to progress the investigation.
If your complaint relates to a food item, you may return the product for a replacement or refund. Most complaints about packaged food arise from isolated incidents of contamination by foreign bodies. Major retailers have strong systems in place to record and escalate such complaints to their head offices, helping to identify any wider issues. You may also return the product directly to the manufacturer, who may provide an explanation and, in some cases, compensation for supplying a substandard product.
Where a complaint suggests that a food item could have wider public health consequences or poses a risk of harm to consumers, we will carry out a formal investigation. This process involves close collaboration with the laboratory of the public analyst and the local authority responsible for the factory where the food was produced. Investigations of this nature can take several weeks to complete.
It is important to note that the Food Safety Team does not become involved in claims for compensation. Our role is solely to determine whether there has been a breach of food safety law and to take appropriate action where necessary.
